Any kind of blanket trigger policy is inimical to academic freedom. Any student can request some sort of individual accommodation, but to say we need some kind of one-size-fits-all approach is totally wrong. The presumption there is that students should not be forced to deal with something that makes them uncomfortable is absurd or even dangerous.

– Quote from Lisa Hajjar, a sociology professor at UCSB

There is a reason you pay to be taught by teachers and not have your education formed by your undergraduate classmates.

UC Santa Barbara students are requesting “trigger warnings” be placed on edgy, graphic, and upsetting material for their classes. This makes me sad. College is where you discover that your viewpoint is one of many, and that some other people hold dangerous views. Grappling with this reality is what college is about; not understanding it doesn’t make you any better prepared for life or for helping others who need you to understand their plight.
